Board Trustee

As a Trustee of Scottish SPCA, you can expect to join a dedicated team of passionate professionals who share our values and who are committed to championing animal welfare.

The Society was founded in 1839 and our strategic ambitions are clearly mapped out for years ahead: see “For All Animals” and our Impact Report 2023. Our Trustees are drawn from diverse backgrounds for their knowledge, expertise and skills – including farming, veterinary, financial and legal sectors (read more about our current Trustees on our website).

Two Trustee positions will become available in 2025, and we would love to hear from individuals with senior level leadership expertise, experience and skills in the following areas:

  • Fundraising and Income Generation
  • Strategic Finance

All Trustees are there to ensure the enhancement of the Scottish SPCA’s reputation and the long term sustainability of this great lifeline organisation. This will include an ability to:

  • Oversee change management
  • Make strategic decisions and offer expertise, guidance and support
  • Be able to commit adequate time to engage in Board and Committee meetings, training and other activities
  • share our values and passion for animal welfare

We always appoint on merit and experience.  We would encourage applications from all parts of Scottish society including people from minority ethnic groups, younger members of our communities and people with disabilities.

Additionally, all directors must meet the “Fit and Proper Persons” criteria to be a charity trustee. You can find guidance and good practice on being a charity trustee at https://www.oscr.org.uk/guidance-and-forms/guidance-and-good-practice-for-charity-trustees/.

The main Board meets 4 times a year and, Trustees / Directors are also asked to support one or two of our strategic committees: People, Culture, Reward & Wellbeing; Health and Safety, Investment, Risk and Environmental; Performance; and Ethics & Policy.  Effective chairing skills at a senior committee level are therefore desirable.

Initial appointment is for a 4-year term with the opportunity for reappointment for a further period of up to 4 years.
